Trained as an architect, she diversified into small-scale livelihood-technologies and rural habitats. After graduating in Architecture from MS-University-Baroda (1988,) she worked in the fields of energy-in-building and appropriate-technology (1990-2000). She earned her Masters in Environmental Studies (2002) and Ph.D. in Geography (2009) from the University-of-Waterloo, Canada.
